Lynne Hamill

Biography

Lynne is studying for a PhD in the multidisciplinary Centre for Research in Social Simulation (CRESS), based in the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey, supervised by Prof Nigel Gilbert. She is being sponsored by Microsoft Research, with Prof Richard Harper as her external supervisor. She is investigating the relationship between new communication technologies and travel, using agent-based modelling.

Draft thesis chapters

Previously Lynne was Deputy Director then Executive Director of the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey, where she was involved in a wide range of projects investigating the relationship between people, society and digital technologies — see publications below.

Prior to that she founded Lynne Hamill Associates (later Hamill Internet, then Hamill and Hamill Ltd) to exploit the opportunities offered by the expanding internet.

However, most of Lynne's career was as a civil servant: she was an economic adviser in the Government Economic Service and later an administrator. During that time she worked for the Department of Health and Social Security, the National Audit Office, HM Customs and Excise, and the Department of Transport. She covered issues including consumer behaviour, taxation, public expenditure policy, investment appraisal, and corporate and business planning. She also edited the annual report of the Department of Transport, which was voted the best departmental report by The Economist magazine.

Lynne holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Southampton and a master's degree from University College London, both in economics.

Lynne enjoys driving her Welsh mountain pony. She was chairman of the British Mule Society, and is now a vice president. She is a member of the Donkey Breed Society, the British Driving Society and the South Downs Harness Club.
